What You Need to Know about Hummer EV: Battery, Specs, Cabin

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is dubbed a Supertruck, given its immense size and powertrain. It’s one of the more unique EV offerings of its kind, with a bombastic design that immediately makes a huge impression on anyone who encounters it.

After the Hummer brand, notorious for its gas-guzzling tendencies, was discontinued in 2010, GMC reintroduced the Hummer in 2020, with the resurrected version featuring a pickup line before eventually sporting Hummer SUVs.

Featuring 1,000 horsepower from its top option, going zero to 60 in three seconds, and a high mile range, the Hummer EV has some appealing features that may pique the interests of EV enthusiasts. Here’s a detailed look at the Hummer EV specs for the 2022 edition of the born-again brand.

What’s New About the New Hummer EV?

What’s New About the New Hummer EV?

Though the Hummer is a familiar name that takes you back to your younger days, the Hummer EV is an all-new model within the GMC lineup, with production on their model of EVs beginning in the fall of 2021. The most expensive model, the Edition 1 model, went on sale first, with less expensive trims coming throughout 2022.

The Edition 1 model features all of the best items that accompany a Hummer EV, including:

  • Adjustable air suspension
  • A power-operated tonneau cover
  • A 13.4-inch infotainment center
  • A Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving feature

What are the Editions/Models of the Hummer EV?

Among the Hummer EV editions to launch in 2022 are the EV3X (fall 2022 launch), EV2X, and EV2, which will be released in 2023 and 2024, respectively, with less powerful two-motor powertrains than the Edition 1 model.

Currently, the EV exceeded expectations with over 65,000 reservations, with new orders becoming challenging to make as availability becomes an issue. The 2022 Hummer EV cost starts at around $110,000.

Hummer EV Specs Include A Huge Powertrain, Motor

The fully-loaded electric vehicle only has one powertrain, with three motors that add up to 1,000 horsepower. The Hummer EV size allows the 2022 edition of the electric vehicle to facilitate so much power, weighing over 9,000 pounds, and a big battery that tops 2,900 pounds. The hummer EV battery size nearly weighs as much as a Honda Civic.

Furthermore, the 2022 Hummer EV also features 11,500 lb-ft of torque from the powertrain, according to GMC, though the number is estimated and likely calculated through the torque-multiplying effect of the Hummer EV’s gear ratios. The actual Hummer EV specs for the torque are between 1,000 and 1,100 lb-ft.

That said, tests done on the electric vehicle speak to its powertrain and motor’s performance capabilities, making it a strong option for on and off-road trips.

What Other Mechanical Specifications Stand Out?

The GMC Hummer EV specs also include Electronic Precision Shift. This electronic transmission range selector consists of a low selection for throttle-off regenerative braking and one-pedal driving ability.

The front and rear differential have a driver-selectable locker, with an eLocker and virtual locker, respectively.

Meanwhile, an integrated trailer brake controller and a Trailering Package include a trailer hitch, CTT Hitch Guidance with Hitch View and image adjustment, and a pair of connectors, including a 4-pin 7-pin connector. There’s also a Trailering Information Label providing max trailer ratings for conventional towing and tongue weight.

What is the Hummer EV’s Battery Size and Capacity?

Considering the Hummer EV’s huge battery, it’s only natural that the EV comes with a large battery capacity, with data from GMC noting a capacity of 617 amp-hours. When you multiply the hummer EV battery size capacity by its operating voltage (400-volt), the EV yields around 246.8 kWh, equating to the double-stacked pack's overall gross capacity. The usable capacity of the Hummer EV is around 86% of the total capacity, lower than comparable EVs where ratios are closer to 90%.

When charging the Hummer EV from empty to full via Level 2 outlets (240 V), losses are better than comparable EVs when conducting tests.

Hummer EV Charging and Battery Ramp

The Hummer EV uses Ultium battery-pack technology, a 24-module battery pack boasting around 329 miles of driving range for each charge. It contains a modular architecture boasting a high-strength double shear plate battery enclosure.

Additionally, the Hummer will feature an electrical architecture that contains 800 volts with a charging capability of 350 kilowatts, allowing for 100 miles of Hummer EV range in 10 minutes.

Drivers of the Hummer EV can charge the electric vehicle on regular charging terminals or at home using accompanying adapters for home charging stations. However, drivers should expect slower charging times if they opt for those charging options rather than going to a DC fast charging station. You can also download the Optiwatt app for cost-effective charging.

What About the Fuel Economy?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings for the Hummer EV are 51 MPGe (miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent) city, 43 MPGe highway, and 47 MPGe combined. Compared to similar vehicles like the Rivian R1T, it has a lower fuel economy, though Hummer’s fuel economy holds up relatively well.

The Hummer EV’s Cabin

With the Hummer EV, you get a five-foot-long cabin bed to fill out the crew cab pickup truck, reflective of the spacious Hummer EV size on offer.

The Hummer EV’s cabin can be opened up to the elements anytime. Thanks to its removable roof, reintroducing a T-Top-like design that was possible in GM sports vehicle models throughout the 1970s and 80s. The transparent panels used for the removable roof are similar to a panoramic glass sunroof when they are in place. However, when you take the panels off and keep them in the front truck of the Hummer EV, you can make the EV feel like a convertible, mirroring the look and feel of a Jeep Convertible, for example.

The cabin’s design combines innovation and convenience while also affording drivers control regardless of the on or off-road conditions.

The Cargo

Hummer EV specs tally the cargo bed length at 60.1 inches, while the bed’s width on the floor is 61.02 inches. Meanwhile, the width between wheelhouses spans 50.08 inches. And the height of the cargo bed is 21.07 inches.

Reflecting the Hummer EV size, the truck's overall cargo space or area is 36.7 cubic feet for the bed and 11.3 cubic feet for the frunk (front and trunk)., making it one of the bigger EVs of its kind. Compared to a Tesla Model 3, for example, the Hummer EV has more overall cargo space.

The Off-Road Capabilities

Both the pickup and SUV versions of the Hummer EV are designed to handle tricky off-road obstacles.

The SUV version includes Crabwalk technology that utilizes a 4-Wheel Steer, with the rear wheels turning up to 10 degrees in each direction. As a result, the SUV can drive diagonally at lower speeds, allowing it to traverse narrow trails seamlessly.

Additionally, the SUV includes Extract Mode, allowing drivers to get extra height while driving off-road and activate the Adaptive Air Ride Suspension to raise approximately six inches to help drivers surmount the toughest obstacles, including fording water and big boulders.

Off-Road Tires and Camera

With specialized engineered 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires, the truck and the SUV can provide optimal balance for on and off-road conditions.

Also, for the truck and the SUV, the Ultravision camera affords off-road drivers up to 18 camera angles for the former and 17 for the latter. These angles include underwater cameras that provide real-time terrain views and an overhead image above the surroundings or where the Hummer EV is being driven. The Surround Vision feature lets drivers navigate tricky terrain and tight spaces when driving in off-road settings.

Hummer EV Specs for Off-Road

For the Hummer EV pickup, the off-road Hummer EV specs include 11.9 inches of ground clearance in Terrain mode and 15.9 inches in Extract Mode. By contrast, the SUV’s specs are 12 inches of ground clearance and 16 inches in Extract Mode.

The approach angle for the truck and the SUV is 44.3 degrees in Terrain Mode and 49.7 degrees in the Extract Mode. The SUV, unlike the truck, includes a spare tire to increase its departure angle, which is 41.8 and 45.6 degrees with the spare vs. 43.3 and 49 degrees without it.

Meanwhile, the breakover angle for the pickup truck is 25.4 and 32.2 degrees in Terrain and Extract mode, respectively, while the SUV boasts 27.1 and 34.4 degrees for each mode. Each angle is engineered to be comparable, if not supersede competing brands.

The truck and the SUV have the same wall climb specs for Terrain and Extract mode, at 18 inches each. Meanwhile, the front and rear suspension travel specs in both modes for the pickup and the SUV are 13 inches each. The standard suspension ensures strong off-pavement handling and highway convenience. The above-mentioned eLocker and front lockers improve off-road traction.

The heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts boost articulation and prevent unnecessary steering feedback during off-road trips.

Infotainment Specs

The infotainment system for the Hummer EV pickup and the SUV includes a 13.4-inch display screen plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. GMC contacted Epic Games, the creators of the popular video game, Fortnite, to create graphics for the EV’s infotainment interface.

Accompanying the interface for the Hummer EV is a wide range of connectivity features that include:

  • A Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity
  • OnStar telematics system

All-in-all, the Hummer EV boasts many promising features, with more details to come as the full rollout of the various electric vehicle models continues. You can also stay updated about Hummer EV news by checking out Optiwatt blogs.
